Trips 2013:
Medical Brigade August 2013
Country: Ghana
Dates: Aug. 6th-17th
More information:Medical Brigades in Ghana, Global Brigades most recent addition, consists of a 10-day brigade that includes 4 clinic days, door-to-door visits, and a public health day. The extended trip also gives the students opportunity to bond with the communities during opening and closing ceremony days and an additional travel day. Global Brigades Ghana operates in the Central Region located right on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, which is the former Gold Coast of West Africa. More specifically, we work closely with the Ministry of Health and the Health Insurance Program in the Mfantseman District that has a doctor to patient ratio of 1 : 48,029, for a population of 192,118. In addition, lack of transportation and poor road systems in these remote communities limits the ability to seek the health resources that are available to this population by the Mfantseman District Ministry of Health. The main health concerns of our communities includes malaria, waterborne illnesses, hypertension, and upper respiratory tract infections.
In all three countries there are many different components that come together to make a successful medical brigade.
We have a lot of work to do to get ready for brigades so all volunteers are asked to help collect supplies and donations. Students are also involved with recruiting medical professionals and preparing educational public health workshops.
If you are interested email [email protected] or [email protected] for an application. Applications were due in February but there are still a few spots available. Late fees will apply.
Water Brigade August 2013
Country: Ghana
Dates: August 19th - 28th
Global Brigades offers a 10 day Water Brigade for volunteers to participate in throughout the year in Ghana. Water Brigades Volunteers assist in designing and implementing water systems to prevent water related illnesses in communities with limited access to clean water. With a sufficient quantity of properly treated water community members can cut off the connection between water and illness and ultimately live healthier more productive lives. In-country team members work with community leaders to design large scale water systems for the entire community. Once planning and design is complete, volunteers work side-by-side with community members to construct the water system. Additionally Water Brigades and its volunteers provide education and training so that the community can properly administer, operate, and maintain their water system. A Water Council and Basic Sanitation Committee are established in communities to ensure the sustainability of the community’s system as well as to improve sanitation and hygiene practices. In collaboration with Public Health Brigades, Microfinance Brigades, and the Global Brigades Honduras Research & Evaluation team, WB is working to identify communities with the most need. With a holistic approach to development we plan to continue working with communities to improve their health and standard of living through the most fundamental resource on the planet, water.
Applications are still being accepted for the water brigade.
Public Health Brigade 2013
Country: Panama
Dates: February 23rd - March 1st
Global Brigades offers a 7 day Public Health Brigade for volunteers to participate in throughout the year. The current focus of the Public Health Program is to develop sustainable health solutions and establish a standard of health quality with an emphasis on preventative methods and education, that will augment the other Global Brigades disciplines. The Public Health Program achieves this by implementing in-home infrastructure improvements, providing health education and engaging community involvement. Each Public Health Brigade will work with individual families, local schools, and community leaders, focusing on holistic and preventative health measures on both an individual and community-wide scale.
